It has been 112 years since the outbreak of World War I, one of the deadliest conflicts in modern history, which reshaped Europe and affected millions of people across the continent. The war officially began on July 28, 1914, following Austria Hungary’s declaration of war on Serbia after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo.
Although the fighting initially centered on Central Europe and the Balkans, the conflict soon spread across much of the world. Macedonia became one of the key battlefronts during the war after Bulgaria entered the conflict in 1915. The region was divided by opposing armies and became the site of fierce battles that lasted for years.
One of the most significant military campaigns was fought along the Macedonian Front, also known as the Salonika Front. Allied forces, including troops from France, the United Kingdom, Serbia, Italy and Greece, fought against the forces of the Central Powers. Thousands of soldiers lost their lives during battles that stretched across the region.
The fighting left a lasting impact on local communities. Many towns and villages suffered heavy destruction, while civilians endured displacement, shortages of food and widespread hardship. The war also changed the political landscape of the Balkans, with new borders and states emerging after the conflict ended in 1918.
Today, memorials, military cemeteries and historical sites across Macedonia continue to preserve the memory of those who fought and died during World War I. Historians consider the Macedonian Front one of the decisive campaigns that contributed to the final defeat of the Central Powers and the end of the war.
