Trump Says US-Iran Talks Offer Hope as Regional Attacks Continue

U.S. President Donald Trump says Washington and Tehran are engaged in what he described as “good talks,” raising hopes that diplomacy could prevent a return to full scale fighting.

However, those hopes remain fragile after Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Iraq reported new drone attacks across the region just days after the United States paused its military campaign against Iran.

Trump said there was a “good chance” of reaching an agreement with Iran, while warning that U.S. military action could resume if negotiations fail.

Washington suspended its two week bombing campaign on Saturday after an escalation that had brought the conflict to a critical point.

Iran has rejected claims that it formally requested negotiations, but its officials acknowledge that messages are still being exchanged through mediators.

Strait of Hormuz Remains a Key Dispute

The biggest obstacle remains the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for international energy supplies.

Iran says it retains control over the waterway and has challenged the U.S. position on how ships should pass through it.

Tehran has also accused Washington of threatening commercial vessels and attempting to impose an illegal maritime blockade.

The dispute has already disrupted shipping and contributed to major swings in oil prices.

Regional Attacks Continue Despite Pause

The pause in U.S. strikes has not stopped regional tensions.

Saudi Arabia said it intercepted drones targeting petroleum related sites, including locations near Riyadh, and blamed Iran backed armed groups operating from Iraq.

Yemen’s Houthi movement, which is aligned with Tehran, also claimed an attack against Saudi Arabia’s East West oil pipeline.

These incidents show how quickly the conflict can spread beyond direct U.S.-Iran confrontation and threaten neighboring countries and critical energy infrastructure.

Oil Prices Remain Volatile

The economic consequences have been immediate.

Oil prices dropped sharply after Washington suspended its attacks and Trump signaled that negotiations could produce an agreement.

On July 27, Brent crude fell by more than 9%, while U.S. crude dropped by more than 8%.

Prices remained volatile on July 28 as markets weighed the possibility of further progress alongside continued regional risks.

Trump Faces Political Pressure at Home

The conflict is also creating political pressure for Trump at home.

Public support for the Iran war remains limited, with a recent poll showing only about one third of Americans backing the military campaign.

That comes ahead of the November midterm elections, when Republicans will be defending narrow majorities in Congress.

A prolonged conflict, particularly one that keeps energy prices elevated, could therefore become both an economic and political liability for the administration.

Questions Over U.S. Military Capacity

There are also questions about how long the United States can sustain its military campaign.

Reuters reported that U.S. military commanders had advised Trump that available targets were becoming limited and that concerns had emerged about ammunition supplies.

Trump rejected the suggestion that the U.S. was facing a serious shortage, saying military inventories were being rebuilt.

Diplomacy Offers a Path Forward

For now, the Trump Iran talks appear to offer the clearest path away from further escalation.

Mediators including Oman, Qatar and Pakistan have been involved in efforts to revive a ceasefire framework, while discussions remain focused on issues including Iran’s nuclear program and the future of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

The situation remains highly uncertain.

Trump’s comments suggest that Washington is willing to give negotiations another chance, but his warning that military strikes could return keeps pressure on Tehran.

With drone attacks continuing and the Strait of Hormuz still at the center of the dispute, the coming days could determine whether the current pause becomes the beginning of a broader diplomatic settlement or simply another temporary break in a conflict that has already shaken the region and global energy markets.
