Montenegro will reject any proposal to establish migrant centers on its territory, Prime Minister Milojko Spajić said.
Spajić emphasized that the Montenegrin government has not participated in negotiations concerning the possible creation of such facilities and has not received an official proposal.
If an initiative is formally submitted, the government’s response will be negative, he said.
The prime minister added that Montenegro would remain a reliable partner of the European Union in protecting shared borders and managing migration. However, he stressed that every decision affecting the country would be made responsibly, transparently and exclusively in the interests of Montenegro’s citizens.
His statement came after Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni mentioned Montenegro as one of the countries where temporary migrant centers could potentially be established.
Spajić’s response makes clear that, although Montenegro intends to continue cooperating with the EU on border security and migration, the government does not support hosting migrant facilities within the country.
