The Serbian folklore group “Mlada Srbadija” from Vancouver performed in Portland, strengthening the long-standing friendship between the Serbian Orthodox communities in Portland and Vancouver.

On September 12, 2026, the group took part in Serbian Days organized by St. Stephen Serbian Orthodox Church and KUD “Gracanica” in Portland.

A Celebration of Serbian Community and Tradition

The visit highlighted the close relationship between St. Stephen Serbian Orthodox Church in Portland and St. Archangel Michael Serbian Orthodox Church in Vancouver, a connection that has continued for many years.

Folklore groups KUD “Gracanica” and KUD “Mlada Srbadija” play an important role in maintaining this friendship and bringing members of the Serbian community together.

The guests from Vancouver expressed their gratitude for the warm hospitality and the opportunity to meet new members of the Serbian community in the United States.

Preserving Serbian Heritage Through Folklore

The organizers noted the importance of keeping Serbian culture and traditions alive, particularly among younger generations.

Many children in the Portland community may not speak Serbian fluently, but they continue to sing Serbian songs and actively participate in folklore. The organizers encouraged children and families to join local folklore groups and Serbian schools as a way of preserving their cultural heritage and building community connections.

The participants expressed hope that the friendship between the communities in Portland and Vancouver will continue through many future gatherings and cultural events.
