Women’s Regional Water Polo League Begins in Zagreb

A newly formed Women’s Regional Water Polo League featuring eight clubs from Serbia and Croatia begins with its first tournament in Zagreb.

The national water polo federations of the two countries recently agreed to establish the competition, which brings their women’s clubs together in a regional league for the first time in six years.

The Serbian representatives are Vojvodina, Palilula, Partizan and Crvena zvezda—the four highest-ranked teams from the previous domestic season.

Croatia will be represented by Mladost, Jadran Split, Jug and Viktoria.

Opening Matches in the Women’s Regional Water Polo League

The first-round games will be played on October 16 at the Mladost swimming complex in Zagreb.

The opening schedule is:

  • 7:00 p.m. – Mladost vs. Partizan
  • 7:00 p.m. – Jug vs. Crvena zvezda
  • 8:30 p.m. – Jadran Split vs. Palilula
  • 8:30 p.m. – Viktoria vs. Vojvodina

The second and third rounds will be played on Saturday, while the final round of the first tournament is scheduled for Sunday.

Serbia women’s national team coach Slađana Drezgić welcomed the launch of the league, saying it would give Serbian clubs access to stronger competition and help improve the quality of both teams and individual players.

She also expressed hope that the competition would become a permanent part of the regional water polo calendar.

Four Teams Will Reach the Final Tournament

The Women’s Regional Water Polo League will be played through two tournaments, with one hosted in Croatia and the other in Serbia.

Each club will face the four teams from the other country. Results from games between clubs from the same country in their national championships will also count toward the regional standings.

The four highest-ranked teams after the two tournaments will qualify for the Final Four, where the league champion will be decided.

Women’s clubs from Serbia and Croatia last competed in a regional league six years ago. That edition included Palilula, Crvena zvezda, Jadran Split and Mladost.
