The St. Archangel Michael Serbian Orthodox Church in Burnaby, British Columbia, will open a new library dedicated to celebrated Serbian poet Desanka Maksimović.
The opening will be marked with a literary and musical evening on Friday, November 6, beginning at 7 p.m.
The event will bring together poetry, literature and music while introducing a new cultural space intended for church members and the wider Serbian community.
Literary Evening Celebrates Desanka Maksimović Library
The new library will carry the name of Desanka Maksimović, one of the most prominent figures in Serbian literature.
Members of the music and poetry group “Crnjanski” will lead the literary program, guiding visitors through selected parts of the Serbian literary tradition.
Professor Dr. Boško Milovanović will deliver the welcoming address. The church described him as a leading expert on Maksimović’s poetry who also knew the poet personally.
Anis Filipović will provide musical accompaniment during the program. After the official portion concludes, visitors will be invited to continue socializing over meatless refreshments and another musical performance by Filipović.
Admission will be based on voluntary donations.
Book Lending Begins November 15
The church expressed special gratitude to Bojan Marinković, who donated new bookshelves, and to members of its Saint Sava Youth Community, who helped prepare and organize the library.
The library’s electronic catalog and book-lending service will become available on November 15.
Visitors will then be able to browse and borrow books every Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The new Desanka Maksimović Library expands the cultural and educational activities offered by the St. Archangel Michael Church, creating another place where members of the Serbian community can gather around language, literature and shared heritage.
