Serbian-American Melissa Bean Wins Illinois Congressional Race

Serbian-American politician Melissa Luburich Bean has won the race for Illinois’ 8th Congressional District, securing her return to the U.S. House of Representatives after 15 years away from elected office.

The Democratic candidate received 88,639 votes, or 65.9% of the total, defeating Republican Jennifer Davis, who received 45,857 votes, or 34.1%.

Bean is expected to begin representing the district in Washington again in 2027. The victory gives her a fourth term in Congress and marks one of the most notable political successes for a member of the Serbian-American community.

Melissa Luburich Bean Returns to Congress

Bean previously represented Illinois’ 8th District for six years, serving three consecutive terms from 2005 to 2011.

After leaving Congress, she stepped away from electoral politics and focused on her family and business career. Her latest victory completes a major political comeback more than a decade after her previous term ended.

In a statement following the election, Bean thanked voters for placing their trust in her and said the result sent a clear message about the direction they want the country to take.

She said Illinois residents are seeking affordable healthcare, housing and education, a healthier environment for future generations, and a government that works for everyone without corruption or cruelty.

Bean added that these challenges could be addressed through committed work and practical problem-solving in Congress.

Victory Celebrated by Serbian Community

Born Melissa Luburich, Bean comes from a Serbian-American family and has maintained ties with the Serbian community in the Chicago area.

Her return to Washington carries particular importance for Serbian Americans, as she is described as the second woman of Serbian origin elected to the U.S. Congress and the most successful Serbian-American woman in national politics.

During her earlier congressional career, Bean was also involved with the Serbian Caucus and represented the interests of Serbian Americans in Washington.

Her decisive election victory gives the Serbian community another recognizable voice in Congress while returning an experienced Illinois politician to the national stage.
