Republican Senator Ashley Moody has won Florida’s US Senate election, securing a victory for President Donald Trump’s party despite a difficult night for Republicans across the country.
Moody defeated Democratic challenger Angie Nixon in the November 3 midterm elections, according to projections reported by CBS News.
Her victory allows Republicans to retain a Senate seat in Florida even as Democrats gained control of both chambers of Congress.
The result also marks an important electoral success for a senator who has maintained close political ties with Trump and his administration.
Ashley Moody Secures Republican Hold on Florida Senate Seat
Moody was appointed to the Senate in 2025 to replace Marco Rubio after he became secretary of state in Trump’s administration.
Before joining Congress, Moody served as Florida’s attorney general, establishing a statewide political profile.
Her election victory gives her a mandate from Florida voters to continue representing the state in Washington.
The result stands in contrast to Republican defeats in several other states, where Democratic candidates won seats previously held by the GOP.
In Texas, Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton, while former Senator Sherrod Brown won the Ohio Senate race against Republican Jon Husted.
Democrats also recorded major victories in North Carolina, South Carolina and Kansas.
Florida Victory Comes as Trump Faces Divided Government
Although Moody’s victory preserves a Republican-held Senate seat, the broader election results represent a significant political setback for Trump’s party.
Democrats won control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, changing the balance of power in Washington for the remainder of Trump’s second presidential term.
The president has acknowledged the election results and indicated that he is prepared to negotiate with Democratic lawmakers.
However, he has also emphasized that he can use his presidential veto to reject legislation he opposes.
For Republicans, Moody’s victory provides a notable positive result in an election dominated by Democratic gains.
Her continued presence in the Senate also means Florida will retain a Republican voice aligned with many of the administration’s priorities.
The new Congress is scheduled to take office in January 2027, when Trump will face a Democratic majority in both chambers.
