American alpine skiing legend Lindsey Vonn has spoken publicly from the hospital after undergoing her third surgery following a serious crash during the downhill event at the Winter Olympic Games Milano Cortina.
“I had my 3rd surgery today and it was successful. Success today has a completely different meaning than it did a few days ago. I’m making progress, and while it is slow, I know I’ll be ok. Thankful for all of the incredible medical staff, friends, and family who have been by my side and the beautiful outpouring of love and support from people around the world. Also, huge congrats to my teammates and all of the Team USA athletes who are out there inspiring me and giving me something to cheer for.”
The 41-year-old skier shared an update on Instagram, posting photos from her hospital bed and giving a thumbs-up.
Vonn crashed just 13 seconds after the start of Sunday’s downhill race and was airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in Treviso. A day later, the multiple-time world champion confirmed that she had suffered a complex fracture of the tibia. Although the fracture is considered stable, doctors said it requires multiple surgical procedures to be properly treated.
Despite the severity of the injury and the long recovery ahead, Vonn’s message struck an optimistic tone, expressing gratitude for the medical team, her family and friends, and the support she has received from fans around the world.
