A major international film project dedicated to Saint Sava is currently being filmed across Europe and the United States, bringing the story of the medieval spiritual leader to a global audience.
The project includes both a feature-length documentary and a television series, offering a detailed portrayal of the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church and one of the most influential figures in Serbian history, culture, and education.
Filming has already been completed at several historically significant religious sites, including the Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos, closely linked to Saint Sava’s monastic life. Production is continuing in Serbia and other countries in the region, while part of the filming is also taking place in the United States, underscoring the international dimension of the project and the importance of the Serbian diaspora.
The film is being developed with the blessing of the Serbian Orthodox Church and in cooperation with monastic communities connected to Saint Sava’s heritage. Producers say the aim is to merge historical scholarship with modern cinematic storytelling, presenting a figure whose legacy continues to shape spiritual and cultural identity centuries later.
An important aspect of the project is its international production partnership. Among the key partners are the American Council for Eastern Europe, Alex Machaskee, and the Serbian Cultural Center Opačići in Washington, D.C., highlighting strong support from Serbian cultural institutions in the United States.
The production is led by Serbian filmmaker Dr. Željko Mirković, known for his internationally recognized documentary work and academic involvement in the U.S. According to the creative team, the goal is not only to recount historical milestones but also to examine Saint Sava’s broader influence on faith, diplomacy, literacy, and national identity.
The documentary and series are expected to reach audiences both in the Balkans and abroad, presenting a story that bridges centuries, continents, and generations.
