Thick snowfall that hit large parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina overnight has caused serious disruptions on the roads, leading to dangerous conditions and at least one major traffic accident.
Drivers faced very slippery and snow‑covered roads early Sunday morning, particularly in central and eastern regions of the country. As a result, a tanker truck overturned on one of the main highways, blocking traffic and creating lengthy delays while emergency crews worked to clear the scene.
Local authorities have urged motorists to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Snow accumulation and poor visibility have made many routes hazardous, especially on major trunk roads connecting regional centres. In some hilly and mountainous areas, snow has fallen heavily enough to make steering and braking difficult even for experienced drivers.
The adverse weather follows a broader pattern of winter storms in the Balkans that have caused significant travel disruptions, power outages, and in some cases fatal accidents. Across the region, public services continue to struggle with road clearance and keeping key transport corridors open amid persistent snowfall.
Traffic police are advising all drivers to equip vehicles with winter tires or snow chains and to reduce speed and increase following distances on slippery surfaces. Commuters should also stay updated on road conditions and weather warnings as crews work around the clock to restore safer conditions on major routes.
