Orthodox Christians Begin Great Lent: The Longest and Most Important Fast Before Easter

Orthodox believers have begun the Great Lent (Easter Fast), the longest and most significant fasting period in the Orthodox Christian calendar. Lasting seven weeks, the fast serves as spiritual preparation for the celebration of Easter. Religious guidance emphasizes that fasting is not limited to dietary restrictions but also includes prayer, repentance, and restraint in behavior. The period calls for both physical discipline and inner spiritual renewal.

The Great Lent begins on Clean Monday and continues until Easter, encompassing seven weeks of intensified spiritual focus. According to church teachings, the fast represents a time of repentance, humility, and self-examination, during which believers seek to strengthen their relationship with God.

From a dietary perspective, the fast involves abstaining from meat, dairy products, and eggs, with many days also excluding fish, oil, and wine, depending on the specific calendar guidelines. In addition to food restrictions, believers are encouraged to refrain from alcohol, smoking, and excessive celebrations. Religious authorities stress that the essence of the fast is not merely in food discipline but in controlling negative thoughts and avoiding anger, swearing, and harmful behavior.

Clergy frequently remind believers that fasting without prayer and good deeds loses its deeper meaning. The focus of Great Lent is described as spiritual purification, forgiveness, and preparation for the Resurrection of Christ. Church guidance also warns against common mistakes, such as reducing the fast solely to a change in diet while neglecting moral and spiritual growth.

As Orthodox Christians enter these seven weeks, the Church calls on the faithful to approach the fast with sincerity, balance, and understanding of its spiritual significance, culminating in the celebration of Easter.
