Serbian Local Vote Tensions: Students Launch Candidate List in Aranđelovac as Opposition Steps Aside; Opposition Bloc Forms in Kula Ahead of March 29 Elections

A local citizens’ group running under the name “Students for Aranđelovac – Youth Wins” announced it is collecting signatures to register its candidate list for the upcoming municipal elections scheduled for March 29. The group said signature collection would take place at three locations in the town, from 10:00 to 18:00, at Kneza Miloša 218a, Kneza Miloša 184, and Vojvode Stepe 2.

In its statement, the group described itself as young people from Aranđelovac who decided not to “stand aside” any longer, saying they formed the citizens’ group to ensure that youth, knowledge, and honesty have a place in local decision-making.

Opposition parties announce they will not run and instead back the student list
Seven opposition parties and civic associations in Aranđelovac announced they will not participate in the local elections and will instead provide full support to the student-backed list. In a joint statement, they said they did not want, in any way, to help the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and its “satellites” secure another term, arguing that such an outcome would mean continuing to “destroy” Aranđelovac for the next four years.

They added that they would put all resources, capacity, and knowledge at the disposal of the student list, framing the move as a coordinated attempt to achieve political change at the municipal level. The signatories named in the statement were the Democratic Party (DS), Party of Freedom and Justice (SSP), Free Citizens Movement (PSG), New Democratic Party of Serbia, Movement for the Restoration of the Kingdom of Serbia (POKS), Serbian Movement Dveri, and the civic association “Grad je naš”.

The same call urged members, supporters, and residents of Aranđelovac to use the signature-collection window to formally support the student list at the announced addresses.

Parallel local-election organizing in Kula: opposition coalition agreement signed
In a separate local-election development ahead of March 29, eight opposition parties, organizations, and citizen groups in Kula signed a coalition agreement, saying they will run “united and decisively” with a stated program for the development of the municipality. The coalition said its objective is to help secure fair conditions for free elections and establish new political accountability in Kula.

The coalition members listed were: the citizens’ group “Kuljani i naš grad”, New Democratic Party of Serbia, People’s Movement of Serbia, Party of Freedom and Justice, Serbia Centre (SRCE), Free Citizens Movement, Monarchists – Movement for the Kingdom of Serbia, and an environmental movement named in the report.

The same coverage noted that students in Kula had already submitted their own list titled “Mladi Kula,” and that a pro-government coalition list had also been filed.
