23 Years Have Passed Since the Assassination of Zoran Djindjic

Today marks 23 years since Zoran Djindjic, Prime Minister of Serbia, leader of the Democratic Party, and a leading figure of the Democratic Opposition of Serbia, was assassinated near the entrance of the Serbian government building on Nemanjina Street in Belgrade.

Djindjic rose to the top of Serbia’s political life after the political changes following the overthrow of Slobodan Milosevic, when Milosevic lost the elections. He became Prime Minister on January 25, 2001.

Before that, executive power in Serbia had a transitional form under the cabinet of Milomir Minic, which governed from October 25, 2000, to January 25, 2001.

After the assassination of Djindjic, the Serbian state carried out the large-scale police operation Operation Sabre, during which hundreds of people were arrested, including members of the Special Operations Unit led by Milorad Ulemek, who was later sentenced to 40 years in prison.

According to the findings of the investigation and the court ruling, Milorad Ulemek, who was sentenced to 40 years in prison, ordered Zvezdan Jovanovic, a member of the Special Operations Unit previously commanded by him, to assassinate Zoran Djindjic.
