Croatian TV Segment Highlights MPs’ Difficulty Identifying Iran on a Map

A Croatian TV report sparked public attention after asking members of parliament to locate Iran on a world map, linking the exercise to their recent public statements about the country and broader geopolitical issues. The segment aimed to test how well lawmakers understand the geography of a state they had been actively discussing in political debates.

The results varied significantly. Some MPs failed to correctly identify Iran, with Stipo Mlinarić pointing to Russia after initial hesitation, while Marin Miletić incorrectly indicated Israel despite previously visiting the region. Tomislav Josić openly admitted he was unsure and pointed toward North Africa, saying he believed Iran was located somewhere there.

On the other hand, several MPs identified Iran quickly and without difficulty. Among them were Nino Raspudić, Krešo Beljak, and Hrvoje Zekanović, as well as Josip Jurčević, who expressed surprise that such a question even needed to be asked.

A number of MPs fell in between, showing uncertainty before arriving at the correct answer. Ivan Račan initially pointed to Saudi Arabia but later corrected himself, explaining that the orientation of the map may have confused him. Others reacted with humor or chose not to answer at all.

The report ultimately highlighted a contrast between confident political discourse on international issues and the varying levels of basic geographic knowledge among elected officials, turning the segment into a widely discussed example of how public figures respond to simple but revealing questions.
