Washington Eyes Ghalibaf as Potential Partner for a “Venezuela-Style” Scenario in Iran

The administration of Donald Trump is reportedly considering a new diplomatic approach toward Iran, with Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the current speaker of Iran’s parliament, emerging as a potential interlocutor.

Ghalibaf, once known for his hardline rhetoric against the United States, is now viewed in some Washington circles as a more pragmatic and “acceptable” partner for possible negotiations. This reflects a broader shift in the White House strategy from relying primarily on military pressure to exploring diplomatic options.

Reports suggest that the U.S. is weighing a model similar to the one used in Venezuela—supporting a cooperative leader in exchange for political survival and favorable energy arrangements. A key objective is to stabilize global oil markets and avoid damage to critical infrastructure, including terminals on Kharg Island.

However, experts and regional sources remain skeptical. They argue that Iran’s political system is resilient and unlikely to concede significant ground. While Ghalibaf is seen as pragmatic, he remains deeply embedded in and loyal to the existing power structure.

At the same time, Washington has dismissed the idea of backing exiled opposition figures such as Reza Pahlavi, citing their limited legitimacy in the country and the risk of triggering instability.

Although Tehran has publicly denied any negotiations, U.S. officials interpret these statements as internal political positioning. According to sources within the administration, Washington is currently “testing the waters” to determine whether there is room for dialogue emphasizing that despite strong rhetoric, the preference remains for a diplomatic resolution over escalation.
