The Greek Embassy in Washington has officially responded to Melania Trump after she recently used the name “Macedonia” to refer to the country during a speech at a summit in the United States. According to the diplomatic mission, the move represents a “corrective measure” aimed at ensuring compliance with legal obligations established under the Prespa Agreement.
During the same event, which was also attended by Rozi Mickoska, the wife of VMRO-DPMNE leader Hristijan Mickoski, Melania Trump referred to the country as “Macedonia,” a phrasing that Greek officials consider a diplomatic error. “The term ‘Macedonia’ refers exclusively to the historical and geographical region in Greece, and its use for a sovereign state creates sensitive diplomatic misunderstandings,” reported Greek Reporter.
The Greek Embassy clarified that contact has been established with US institutions to ensure that future public and official references use the correct nomenclature, “North Macedonia.” Diplomats warned that ignoring the agreed name not only violates international obligations but also creates regional confusion and could potentially affect perceptions of Greek cultural identity.
