Iran Enters Trump-Pope Clash With Viral AI Video

An AI-generated video shared by Iran’s embassy in Tajikistan has added a new layer to the growing public clash involving U.S. President Donald Trump and Pope Leo XIV. The clip, which circulated widely online, came in response to a now-deleted social media post by Trump that depicted him in a Christ-like image and triggered backlash from religious and political commentators. Trump later removed the post after criticism, while the wider dispute intensified over the pope’s criticism of war and the use of religious imagery in politics.

The Iranian reaction was widely interpreted as an attempt to insert itself into the already tense exchange between Washington and the Vatican. Pope Leo XIV had publicly stressed that God does not bless conflict, framing his message around peace, restraint and moral responsibility. His remarks were seen as part of a broader criticism of war rhetoric and the invocation of faith to justify military action.

Trump responded publicly to the criticism and, according to reports, defended the now-deleted AI image after it sparked outrage among some conservative and religious audiences. The controversy drew additional attention because it unfolded at a time of heightened international tension and sharpened scrutiny of Trump’s language toward both Iran and the Vatican.

At the same time, pressure on relations with Catholic institutions has grown on another front. In South Florida, the Trump administration canceled an $11 million federal contract with Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Miami, ending funding tied to services for unaccompanied migrant children and putting a long-running program at risk of shutting down within months.

Together, the online provocation, the clash with Pope Leo XIV, and the funding dispute involving a Catholic charity have turned an already contentious political moment into a wider confrontation touching religion, diplomacy and public messaging.
