Louisiana Community in Mourning After Eight Children Killed in Domestic Violence Shooting

A devastating act of domestic violence has left a Louisiana community in mourning after eight children were killed and two women were seriously injured in a shooting that unfolded across two homes in Shreveport early Sunday. Authorities said the suspect later died after fleeing the scene in a carjacked vehicle and being confronted by police following a pursuit.

Police identified the gunman as Shamar Elkins and said he was the only suspect in the case. Investigators said seven of the eight children killed were his own, while the eighth was a relative. The victims were three boys and five girls between the ages of 3 and 11.

According to investigators, the violence began at one residence, where a woman was shot, before the suspect went to a second home on West 79th Street. There, police said, the children were killed. A second woman, identified as the suspect’s wife, was also seriously wounded. The other injured woman is believed to have been his girlfriend. Both survived the attack.

After the shooting, authorities said the suspect fled the area and carjacked another vehicle at gunpoint. Police tracked him into neighboring Bossier Parish, where officers opened fire and killed him after the chase ended. State police are now reviewing that part of the incident.

Officials described the case as one of the most horrific episodes the city has ever faced. Investigators believe the shooting was domestic in nature, but said they are still trying to determine what led to the attack. A handgun was reportedly used during part of the violence, while the suspect was armed with a rifle-style pistol when officers caught up with him.

The scale of the loss has shaken residents and public officials alike. Police said the crime scene was extensive, and local leaders spoke openly of heartbreak and disbelief. Neighbors said they had never seen anything like it in the area and described the killings as incomprehensible.

Authorities also said the suspect had a prior firearms-related conviction from 2019, a detail now likely to draw further scrutiny as the investigation continues. In the aftermath, city leaders and community members gathered near the scene to pray for the victims and their families, while calls also grew for stronger mental health support for those affected by the tragedy.

For Shreveport, the killings have become more than a criminal investigation. They are now a profound communal wound, marked by the loss of eight young lives and a broader sense of grief that will not fade quickly.
