Five Croat political parties in Bosnia and Herzegovina have agreed to support Zdenko Lučić as their joint candidate for the Croat member of the country’s tripartite presidency, ahead of the 2026 general elections.
The agreement was reached by a bloc often referred to as the “Croat Five”, which includes HDZ 1990 and several smaller parties. Party leaders said the decision reflects a shared goal of consolidating political support and presenting a unified alternative within the Croat electorate.
Lučić, a lawyer and former military officer, confirmed his candidacy following the meeting and thanked the parties for their backing. He emphasized that his campaign will focus on protecting the constitutional and political rights of Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while advocating institutional stability and equality among the country’s three constituent peoples.
According to party representatives, the decision to rally behind a single candidate came after internal consultations and negotiations, aimed at avoiding fragmentation of the Croat vote. They stressed that unity is necessary to strengthen political representation at the state level.
The coalition also signaled openness to cooperation with other political actors but made clear that their primary objective is to ensure legitimate representation of Croats in the presidency.
Lučić’s candidacy positions him as a challenger to candidates from other major Croat parties, including the ruling HDZ BiH. The race for the Croat seat in the presidency is expected to be highly competitive, reflecting broader political divisions within the Croat bloc.
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s presidency consists of three members—one Bosniak, one Croat, and one Serb—each directly elected. The upcoming elections in 2026 are expected to play a significant role in shaping the country’s political direction amid ongoing debates over electoral reform and representation.
