Mickoski: Youth Working Abroad Should Not Expect Free Healthcare at Home

Prime Minister of Macedonia, Hristijan Mickoski, said that young people who spend part of the year working abroad should not expect to benefit from free public healthcare in their home country.

Speaking about migration and social policy, Mickoski stressed that the system must remain fair and sustainable. He pointed out that it is not reasonable for individuals to work in foreign tourist destinations temporarily while relying on state funded services back home without contributing. His comments come amid growing concerns over emigration and demographic decline in Macedonia.

Mickoski also highlighted the government’s new Demographic Resilience Strategy 2026–2046, describing it as a long term national framework aimed at shaping the country’s future. The strategy focuses on addressing population decline, strengthening the economy, and creating better conditions for young people to stay. According to him, the plan includes measures to support families, improve living standards, and encourage workforce retention, as the country faces ongoing migration challenges.
The Prime Minister emphasized that tackling demographic issues will require coordinated policies and long term commitment across institutions.
