Earthquake Recorded Near Herceg Novi
An earthquake struck Montenegro on Monday, May 11, with its epicenter near Herceg Novi. Reports cited different magnitude measurements, with some stating 3.2 on the Richter scale and others reporting 3.7. According to the available data, the epicenter was located around 17 kilometers northeast of Herceg Novi, while the hypocenter was placed at a depth of about six kilometers in reports citing the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.
Tremor Felt Beyond Montenegro
The tremor was felt in several Montenegrin coastal towns, including Herceg Novi, Budva and Tivat. Residents reported that windows rattled, buildings shook briefly and monitors moved on office desks. Some described hearing a rumbling sound similar to a large truck passing by.
The earthquake was also felt outside Montenegro, including parts of Croatia and Bosnia. Residents from areas including Dubrovnik and nearby locations said the shaking was short but noticeable.
No Damage or Injuries Reported
According to the reports, there were no immediate reports of material damage or injuries. Competent services were monitoring the situation after the tremor.
Public Fear Linked to Past Earthquakes
Although this earthquake was not strong, reports noted that tremors in Montenegro often cause fear among citizens, especially older residents who remember the devastating 1979 earthquake, measured at magnitude 7. The latest tremor again reopened public concern about seismic risk in Montenegro, particularly along the coast.
Experts have previously warned that earthquake risk remains one of the dominant natural risks in Montenegro. The reports also recalled concerns about construction standards, urban planning and preparedness in seismically active areas, especially in zones where many people gather, such as schools.
