The Croatian-Serbian comedy “Svadba”, directed by Igor Šeregi, has become one of the biggest regional cinema successes in recent years, breaking records in Croatia, expanding strongly across the wider region and reaching international audiences. The film has also entered the global Letterboxd list of the best films of 2026 so far, placing 25th among titles from around the world. Its appearance on that list is presented as a significant success for a regional film competing alongside major Hollywood and international productions.

In Croatia, “Svadba” became the most-watched film in the history of Croatian cinemas, surpassing the long-standing record previously held by “Titanic.” According to the reported box-office data, the film reached 522,106 viewers in Croatia, overtaking “Titanic,” which had held the record with 495,000 admissions. Across Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia and Slovenia, the film attracted more than one million viewers, a rare result for regional theatrical distribution.

The film’s success was marked in Split, at CineStar 4DX Mall of Split, where the one-millionth regional viewer was officially recorded. CineStar Cinemas Croatia awarded the viewer a commemorative gift. When Croatian figures are combined with Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the film had 202,063 viewers, “Svadba” reached 724,169 admissions in those two countries alone.

The film also achieved notable success in Switzerland. In German-speaking Switzerland, “Svadba” reached first place on the cinema charts after its first official week of release, ahead of “Wuthering Heights” and “Ewigi Liebi.” It had already reached third place through previews alone, then opened with 16,054 admissions and reached 28,925 total admissions across Switzerland, becoming the most successful film from the Western Balkans ever shown there.

The story centers on two families from Croatia and Serbia whose private relationships become entangled with broader social and political tensions. The plot begins when Croatian businessman Miljenko learns shortly before his birthday that his company is close to bankruptcy, while also finding out that his daughter Ana, who lives in London, is pregnant by Nebojša, the son of the Serbian prime minister. From that conflict, the film develops as a comedy and social satire about family, politics and regional relations.

The cast includes Rene Bitorajac, Dragan Bjelogrlić, Linda Begonja, Vesna Trivalić, Anđelka Stević Žugić, Roko Sikavica, Nika Grbelja and Marko Grabež, alongside Seka Sablić, Srđan Žika Todorović, Snježana Sinovčić Šiškov and Dejan Aćimović. Director Igor Šeregi said the film showed that despite differences, nationalities and problems, love always wins, thanking everyone who watched, recommended and supported the film.
