US and Denmark Discuss Expanded American Military Presence in Greenland Amid Strategic Arctic Concerns

Talks Confirmed by Washington and Copenhagen

The United States and Denmark are holding regular talks on expanding the American military presence in Greenland, according to reports citing several unnamed officials familiar with the discussions. The White House confirmed that the administration of President Donald Trump is conducting high-level talks with Denmark and Greenland on the issue, but did not disclose details of the negotiations. Denmark’s Foreign Ministry also confirmed that an active diplomatic channel with Washington exists, without providing further information.

Proposal for Three New Bases

According to the reports, US officials are considering opening three new military bases in southern Greenland. These bases would reportedly be formally designated as sovereign American territory. The proposed facilities would have a strategic role in monitoring Russian and Chinese maritime activity in the GIUK gap, the key North Atlantic corridor between Greenland, Iceland and the United Kingdom. One of the possible locations mentioned is Narsarsuaq, where a former US military base already existed and where airport infrastructure is already in place.

Strategic Importance of Greenland

Greenland is described as strategically important because of its geographic position and natural resources. It is a semi-autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, while security policy remains under the authority of Copenhagen. The reports state that Washington sees the island as increasingly important in the context of Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic and North Atlantic.

Diplomatic Crisis After Trump’s Statements

The negotiations are taking place after earlier tensions caused by Trump’s statements on Greenland. In January, Trump said the United States should “own” Greenland in order to prevent Russia or China from gaining influence over the island, adding that this could happen in an “easy” or “hard” way. The reported talks on new military bases are therefore also being presented as part of an effort to calm the diplomatic crisis created by those remarks.

No Final Agreement Confirmed

Although the talks have reportedly advanced significantly in recent months, there has been no official confirmation of a concrete agreement on the new bases. Sources cited in the reports say American officials are optimistic that the discussions are moving in a positive direction, while both Washington and Copenhagen remain cautious in public statements. The central issue remains whether the proposed expansion of US military infrastructure in Greenland can be agreed in a way acceptable to Denmark, Greenland and the United States.
