Sinner breaks Djokovic’s Masters 1000 record after quarter-final win in Rome

Jannik Sinner has broken Novak Djokovic’s record for the longest winning streak at ATP Masters 1000 tournaments after defeating Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals of the Italian Open in Rome. The world number one won 6-2, 6-4, completing the match in around an hour and a half and securing his 32nd consecutive victory at Masters 1000 level. Djokovic’s previous record stood at 31 straight wins, achieved in 2011.

Sinner controlled the match from the start, making an early break in the first set and imposing his rhythm. Rublev had chances to respond, but the Italian saved break points and then added another break to close the opening set. The second set followed a similar pattern, with Sinner again breaking early and preventing Rublev from fully returning to the match, despite the Russian managing to recover one break and reduce the score to 4-3.

With this victory, Sinner also reached the semi-finals of the Rome Masters. His current winning run began at the Paris Masters in 2025 and continued through Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid and now Rome. Reports note that 30 of his 32 victories in this streak came without losing a set, underlining the scale of his dominance.

Sinner has not lost at a Masters 1000 event since October 5 last year. His last defeat at this level came in Shanghai, when he retired due to injury against Tallon Griekspoor, while his last fully completed Masters 1000 loss was in the 2025 Italian Open final against Carlos Alcaraz.

The Italian now stands one step closer to another major achievement in Rome. If he wins both the semi-final and the final, he would claim a sixth consecutive Masters 1000 title, something no player has done before, and would also complete the set of all nine Masters 1000 titles in his career, a feat previously achieved only by Djokovic.
