Putin Heads to Beijing Days After Trump’s China Visit, Highlighting Xi’s Growing Diplomatic Leverage

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit Beijing this week for talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, just days after U.S. President Donald Trump held his own meetings in China.

According to the Kremlin, Putin’s visit will focus on further strengthening the “strategic partnership” between Russia and China. Moscow has rejected suggestions that the timing is connected to Trump’s recent trip, saying the agenda had been agreed in advance.

Still, the back-to-back visits place China at the center of a major geopolitical moment. Trump’s visit reportedly produced no major breakthrough on trade, Ukraine or the conflict with Iran, while those same issues are expected to be discussed during Putin’s meeting with Xi.

Putin is scheduled to arrive in Beijing on Tuesday evening and meet Xi on May 20. His delegation will include business representatives, senior ministers, regional governors and the head of Russia’s central bank — a sign of Moscow’s deepening economic reliance on China.

China has become Russia’s most important international partner since the start of the war in Ukraine. Western officials have repeatedly expressed concern that Beijing’s economic and diplomatic support has helped Moscow withstand international pressure.

At the same time, analysts believe Xi’s main strategic focus remains Taiwan. After his China visit, Trump appeared to leave open the possibility that future U.S. support for Taiwan could depend on negotiations with Beijing. He described the issue as a potential “negotiating chip,” a position that could be seen as a diplomatic opportunity for China.

The timing of the two visits underscores Beijing’s growing influence as both Washington and Moscow seek to secure China’s support on major global issues. For Xi, the moment offers a chance to balance competing interests strengthening ties with Russia while testing how far the United States may be willing to go in its relationship with China.
