Montenegro is marking May 21, Independence Day, with official congratulations, public messages and a ceremonial programme dedicated to the restoration of state independence. The holiday commemorates the 2006 referendum, when Montenegro renewed its independence and returned to full international statehood.

Political and public officials used the occasion to send messages emphasizing statehood, civic unity, European values and responsibility toward the country’s future. The congratulations presented Independence Day as one of the most important dates in modern Montenegrin history and as a moment for reaffirming the country’s democratic, multiethnic and European orientation.

In Podgorica, the Government of Montenegro, in cooperation with the Capital City and Radio Television of Montenegro, prepared a ceremonial programme marking 20 years since the restoration of independence. The programme runs from May 15 to May 22 and includes cultural, artistic and public events dedicated to the jubilee.

Independence Day is also marked as a public holiday. In line with the law on state and other holidays, May 21 and May 22 are non-working days in Montenegro.

The celebrations combine institutional messages, cultural programming and symbolic remembrance of the referendum that shaped Montenegro’s modern political identity. The holiday is presented not only as an anniversary of independence, but also as an opportunity to underline the country’s future direction, social cohesion and commitment to European integration.
