Alberta to Hold Vote on Whether to Open Path Toward Possible Secession From Canada

Canada’s oil rich province of Alberta will hold a non binding vote on 19 October 2026 on whether it should remain part of Canada or begin a constitutional process that could lead to a future binding referendum on independence.

The announcement was made by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, who said that she personally supports Alberta remaining within the Canadian federation, but argued that citizens must have the right to express their position. The move follows a civic petition calling for secession, which collected more than 300,000 signatures earlier this year. A separate petition supporting Alberta’s continued place in Canada collected more than 400,000 signatures.

The debate reflects growing separatist sentiment in the province, driven by long-standing dissatisfaction with decision makers in Ottawa. Supporters of independence argue that Alberta contributes more to Canada than it receives in return, especially because of issues related to control over oil, gas and natural resources.

The planned vote will not automatically lead to independence. Even if the pro secession side wins, Canada’s rules require a clear question, a clear majority and long negotiations with the federal government before any separation could take place.

Polls indicate that most residents would vote against independence. Still, the referendum is being presented as one of the strongest political expressions so far of Alberta’s frustration with the federal government and its desire to formally test public opinion on the province’s future within Canada.
