Barcelona reportedly interested in Željko Obradović as club searches for new direction after Pascual’s expected departure

Barcelona has reportedly entered the race for Željko Obradović, with Spanish media presenting the possible move as one of the biggest coaching stories in European basketball. The most successful coach in EuroLeague history is expected to soon announce which club he will lead next season, following his unsuccessful separation from Partizan.

According to reports from Catalonia, Barcelona could become Obradović’s next destination. The speculation intensified after information that Xavi Pascual is expected to leave for Dubai, forcing Barcelona’s management to look for a high-profile coaching solution capable of calming dissatisfaction among supporters and restoring ambition at the club.

Obradović is said to have accelerated his decision-making process after the Final Four, following internal discussions with people close to him. Although there had been speculation that he could return to Panathinaikos after a turbulent week involving Ergin Ataman, the Barcelona option is now being presented as increasingly serious.

June is described as a decisive month for Obradović’s future, similar to the period five years ago when he returned to Partizan. A move to Barcelona would also mark his return to Spanish basketball, where he previously left a major mark.

The reports also place the possible move in the wider EuroLeague context. With competition becoming increasingly strong, clubs are expected to make larger investments in order to remain competitive. The example of new champion Olympiacos is mentioned, after the club reportedly agreed moves for Jean Montero and Cody Miller-McIntyre immediately after winning the title.

Although there had been speculation about EuroLeague expansion and a possible conference-based format, the latest information says the competition will again feature 20 clubs next season. Against that background, the key question now is which of those clubs Obradović will lead, with Barcelona emerging as one of the most closely watched possibilities.
