Dragoljub Mićunović, one of the most prominent figures of modern Serbian democratic politics and the first president of the restored Democratic Party, has died at the age of 96. His death was announced by the Democratic Party, which described him as part of the generation that personally paid the price of freedom, but never gave up the struggle for a democratic Serbia.
Mićunović was a philosopher, university professor and respected intellectual, known beyond Serbia’s borders as one of the most important Serbian thinkers of his generation. Alongside his academic work, he became a defining political figure during the return of political pluralism in Serbia, when he led the renewed Democratic Party in 1990.
He will also be remembered as one of the organizers of the 1968 student demonstrations, an event that marked his public and political path. Later, he remained closely tied to the Democratic Party, ending his active political career as president of its Political Council and honorary president of the party.
The Democratic Party stated that Mićunović’s name remains part of its identity, its renewal and its commitment to continue the fight for a Serbia of free citizens, strong institutions and democratic values. His death marks the passing of a political elder who connected philosophy, civic courage and the long struggle for democracy in Serbia.
