Slovenian Court Sentences Man Over Fatal Beating Outside Nightclub

A court in Slovenia has sentenced a 21-year-old man to prison over a violent attack outside a nightclub in Novo Mesto that led to the death of Aleš Šutar, a case that triggered public outrage, mass protests and political consequences across the country.

The defendant, identified by local media only as S. Š., was found guilty of causing particularly serious bodily injury resulting in death. The court handed him a combined sentence of six years and nine months in prison, taking into account two previous suspended sentences.

The attack took place during the night between October 24 and 25, 2025, outside a nightclub in Novo Mesto. According to the investigation, Šutar arrived at the scene after his son had been involved in a confrontation with a group of men. He was then physically attacked and suffered severe head injuries after falling. He later died in hospital.

The accused admitted guilt during the proceedings. Police had initially detained one of his relatives, but that person was later released after witness statements were reviewed. S. Š. was subsequently placed in custody and has now been convicted.

The case shocked Slovenia and sparked large demonstrations in Novo Mesto, where thousands of people demanded greater accountability from institutions and stronger public safety measures. The public pressure also led to resignations by some officials.

Following the tragedy, Slovenia adopted a package of security measures widely referred to as “Šutar’s Law.” The legislation expanded police powers in areas with higher crime rates and introduced tougher measures related to surveillance, penalties for violent crimes and public safety procedures.
