NASA has awarded new contracts to several U.S. space companies, including Blue Origin, Astrolab, Lunar Outpost and Firefly Aerospace, as the agency moves forward with its plans to expand robotic and human exploration of the Moon.

The contracts are part of NASA’s broader Artemis program, which aims to establish a long-term human presence on the lunar surface and prepare for future deep-space missions, including eventual missions to Mars.

According to NASA, Astrolab received a $219 million contract, while Lunar Outpost was awarded $220 million to build and deliver lunar terrain vehicles. These rovers are expected to support future astronaut activity on the Moon and may also be used in robotic operations before crews arrive.

Blue Origin, the space company founded by Jeff Bezos, received a $188 million contract to deliver the rovers to the lunar surface using its uncrewed Blue Moon Mark 1 cargo lander.

NASA also selected Firefly Aerospace to develop a spacecraft that will transport drones from Earth orbit to the Moon for the MoonFall mission, which is planned for launch in 2028.

The new contracts reflect NASA’s increasing reliance on private space companies to build the technology and infrastructure needed for sustained lunar exploration. The agency’s long-term vision includes surface vehicles, robotic systems, landers and other equipment that could help astronauts operate near the Moon’s south pole.

The Artemis program is designed not only to return astronauts to the Moon, but also to create the foundation for a more permanent presence there. NASA sees the Moon as a testing ground for technologies that could later be used on Mars and other deep-space destinations.
