Belgrade to Host Global Conference of Women Parliamentarians

Belgrade is set to host the Global Conference of Women Parliamentarians from June 2 to 4, bringing hundreds of political representatives and international officials to Serbia’s capital.

The event will be held under the auspices of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, with the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia serving as host. Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabić is scheduled to officially open the conference on June 2 at 9 a.m., following a formal dinner for guests the evening before.

According to organizers, the three-day gathering will bring together 427 participants from 65 countries. Among them are 206 members of parliament, including 162 female lawmakers and 44 male lawmakers.

Several member countries of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s Executive Committee have confirmed their participation, including Azerbaijan, Peru, Poland, Qatar and the United Kingdom. The conference will also include representatives from a wide range of international organizations and partner institutions, such as UN Women, UNESCO, UNDP, UNHCR, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, International IDEA and other groups focused on democracy, equality and human rights.

Five women serving as speakers or presidents of parliaments and senates are also expected to attend. They include parliamentary leaders from Hungary, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Zimbabwe and Lesotho.

Senior representatives of international parliamentary organizations will also take part, including Inter-Parliamentary Union President Tulia Ackson and IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong.

Delegations from 12 European Union member states have confirmed their attendance, including Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain and Sweden.

Other participating countries include Canada, China, Japan, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

The conference is expected to focus attention on the role of women in parliamentary life and international political cooperation, while positioning Belgrade as a meeting point for lawmakers and institutional representatives from around the world.
