A powerful explosion at a fireworks factory in northern Malta injured two people Monday morning, sending smoke and debris high into the air and shaking nearby buildings.
Two people were injured Monday after a powerful explosion struck the Ta’ Lourdes fireworks factory in northern Malta, according to police.
The blast happened at around 6:35 a.m. local time and was followed by a second strong explosion. Videos shared by local media showed a large plume of smoke rising from the site, while nearby residents reported that buildings shook and glass shattered from the force of the blasts.
Police said the two injured men were working in nearby fields when the explosions occurred. Their injuries were described as minor. Authorities also confirmed that no workers were inside the fireworks factory at the time of the incident.
Small explosions reportedly continued for hours after the initial blast, according to local media. Emergency services were sent to the scene, while officials worked to secure the area and assess the damage.
Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela said his thoughts were with those affected by the explosion and confirmed that authorities had been immediately dispatched to assist.
The cause of the explosion has not yet been confirmed. Authorities are expected to investigate the incident further.
