Montenegro is preparing heightened security measures ahead of the EU-Western Balkans Summit, which is set to take place in Tivat on June 4 and 5.

Authorities will deploy more than 1,500 police officers during the two-day event, as officials expect the arrival of multiple high-level delegations from across Europe and the region.

Part of the Porto Montenegro complex in Tivat will operate under a special access regime, while some hospitality and business facilities in the area will face temporary restrictions. Traffic on the Adriatic Highway will also be periodically limited, with full temporary closures expected at certain points starting from noon on Wednesday.

Local officials said transport has been organized for delegation members by boat toward Kotor, Tivat and Herceg Novi, while buses will be used for travel to Budva.

Tivat Mayor Željko Komnenović said the city has taken steps to reduce congestion at the airport, where a large number of summit participants are expected to arrive.

“Most of the delegation members will land at Tivat Airport, and more than 20 delegations are expected,” Komnenović said, adding that boat transport will help ease pressure on local roads during the summit.

The EU-Western Balkans Summit is expected to bring together officials for talks focused on regional cooperation, European integration and the future relationship between the European Union and the Western Balkans.
