British actress Emily Watson, one of the most respected and celebrated performers of her generation, will be honored with the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo at the 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival, recognizing her exceptional contribution to international cinema. In addition to receiving the prestigious award, Watson will also serve as President of the Jury for the festival’s Competition Program, Feature Film, placing her at the center of one of Southeast Europe’s most important film events.
Festival organizers described Watson’s return to Sarajevo, nearly two decades after her last visit, as a special moment for both the festival and its audience. Sarajevo Film Festival Director Jovan Marjanović praised her remarkable career, highlighting her emotional depth, artistic integrity and lasting influence on contemporary filmmaking. He noted that her presence will be particularly meaningful for filmmakers competing at this year’s festival, many of whom have been inspired by her work over the years.
Watson has built an acclaimed career across film, television and theatre, earning widespread recognition for performances that combine emotional intensity with remarkable versatility. A two time Academy Award nominee, she first gained international attention for her breakthrough role in “Breaking the Waves,” which earned her numerous critics’ awards and nominations from the Oscars, BAFTAs and Golden Globes. Since then, she has appeared in a long list of acclaimed productions, including “Gosford Park,” “War Horse,” “The Theory of Everything,” “Chernobyl,” “Dune: Prophecy,” and the recent adaptation of “Hamnet.”
