Shock Elimination After Penalty Drama

Germany suffered a shocking early elimination from the FIFA World Cup after losing to Paraguay on penalties in the first knockout round. The match remained without a winner after regular time and extra time, before Paraguay advanced thanks to greater composure in the decisive moments of the penalty shootout.

The defeat ended Germany’s campaign much earlier than expected and made the national team one of the biggest disappointments of the tournament. After an unimpressive group-stage performance, Germany failed to respond in the knockout phase and was eliminated by a Paraguay side that showed more energy, determination and concentration when it mattered most.

The elimination also ended another German tradition, as the national team once again entered a period of serious questioning after another early World Cup exit. Paraguay, meanwhile, moved into the quarter-finals, where it will face the winner of the match between France and Sweden.

Nagelsmann Does Not Plan to Resign

Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann said he has no intention of stepping down after the defeat to Paraguay, despite the deep disappointment caused by the elimination. He described the result as extremely bitter, but said he remains ready to continue his work if the German Football Association gives him its trust.

Nagelsmann stressed that he is not running away from responsibility and that he understands the pressure created by such a failure. However, he also said he believes the project still has a foundation for continuation.

The coach revealed that he had already held talks with senior officials from the federation. According to him, those conversations were fair and constructive, with no rushed decisions made immediately after the elimination.

Klopp Criticizes Disallowed Goal Decision

Jürgen Klopp reacted strongly to the disallowed German goal, expressing clear dissatisfaction with the decision during his analysis. He said that if such a situation is considered illegal, then Arsenal would not have become Premier League champions, because, according to him, they score a large percentage of their goals in that way.

Klopp said football is often decided by small details, but that moments like this are especially painful for the team that loses. He added that a match is won when the ball goes into the net, calling the situation cruel, while also noting that there are many more difficult things than defeat in sport. Still, he said that when a team’s dream collapses in such a way, it is very difficult to accept.

After the match, Kai Havertz publicly apologized and accepted responsibility for his missed penalty. He said the disappointment was enormous and admitted that Germany had failed to fulfill its plan at the World Cup.

Klinsmann Questions Germany’s Identity

Former Germany player and coach Jürgen Klinsmann reacted angrily after the elimination, calling it a very sad day for everyone in Germany. He said Germany had not expected to go out in the first knockout round and described the manner of the defeat as deeply disappointing.

Klinsmann criticized the team’s performance across the 120 minutes, saying Germany looked unprepared to take control of the match. He said there was not enough energy, aggression or determination to win the battle against a very good Paraguay team, even though everyone knew the match would be difficult.

He also questioned the current identity of the German national team, saying that the team no longer has a clear football character. His criticism reflected wider concern that Germany’s problems are not limited to one match, but point to deeper issues in the structure, mentality and direction of the team.

A New Period of Reassessment

Germany’s elimination is now expected to open a new cycle of analysis and possible reconstruction. The result against Paraguay has intensified pressure on the coaching staff, the players and the national federation, especially because the team again failed to meet expectations on the World Cup stage.

Nagelsmann insists that he is prepared to continue and does not want to abandon the project, while former German football figures are demanding serious answers about the team’s identity, preparation and mentality. The penalty defeat therefore represents more than a single lost match: it has become another turning point for German football after a tournament that ended far earlier than planned.
