Workers in Montenegro could soon enjoy a regular four-day weekend once every month under a proposed amendment to the country’s Labor Law aimed at improving work-life balance and employee well-being.
The proposal, submitted to parliament by members of the Democratic Montenegro parliamentary group, would grant employees an additional day off on the Friday preceding the last weekend of each month. Combined with the regular weekend, the measure would create an uninterrupted three-day break every month.
According to MP Duško Stijepović, one of the proposal’s supporters, the initiative is designed to strengthen workers’ rights while promoting better physical and mental health, a healthier balance between professional and private life, and greater motivation and productivity in the workplace.
Supporters of the proposal also argue that the reform could generate wider social and economic benefits. They believe additional long weekends would encourage families to spend more time together, increase participation in cultural, sporting, and community activities, and provide a boost to domestic tourism and local businesses.
The initiative comes as many European countries continue exploring more flexible working arrangements, with governments and employers increasingly placing greater emphasis on employee well-being alongside productivity. Montenegro’s proposal follows this broader trend of rethinking traditional work schedules in response to changing labor market expectations.
The amendments will now proceed through the parliamentary process, where lawmakers will decide whether the proposed monthly extended weekend becomes part of Montenegro’s labor legislation.
