Keiko Fujimori Wins Peru’s Presidency After Narrow Election Victory

Keiko Fujimori has been elected the new president of Peru after securing a razor-thin victory in one of the country’s closest presidential elections in recent history. Following weeks of vote counting and the review of contested ballots, electoral authorities confirmed that the conservative candidate had emerged as the winner.

According to the final official count, Fujimori received 50.135 percent of the vote, defeating left-wing candidate Roberto Sánchez, who won 49.865 percent. The difference amounted to fewer than 50,000 votes, reflecting the deep political divisions within the South American nation.

In her first remarks after the result, Fujimori thanked voters for their confidence and pledged to govern with humility and responsibility. She said her priorities would include restoring public security, stimulating economic growth, reducing inequality, and working toward national reconciliation after a highly polarized campaign.

Her opponent, Roberto Sánchez, has refused to concede defeat, alleging irregularities in the electoral process and calling for further protests. However, international election observers have stated that the vote was conducted fairly and have found no evidence of widespread fraud.

Fujimori, leader of the Popular Force party and daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori, will become Peru’s tenth president since 2016 when she is sworn into office on July 28. Her victory marks her fourth presidential campaign and ends a series of previous unsuccessful attempts to reach the country’s highest office.

The new president inherits a country facing persistent political instability, rising crime, and economic challenges. Analysts believe her administration will face the difficult task of rebuilding public confidence in state institutions while seeking consensus in a politically divided Peru.
