Elon Musk’s political organization, America PAC, is preparing a major campaign aimed at increasing Republican voter turnout in the 2026 U.S. congressional elections, according to reporting by The New York Times. The group is reportedly considering spending between $100 million and $120 million on the effort, potentially making it one of the largest outside political spending operations of the midterm cycle. The campaign is expected to focus on mobilizing conservative voters through door to door organizing, digital advertising and direct mail.
America PAC confirmed to Reuters that it expects to play a significant role in the Republican turnout operation, although spokesperson Andrew Romeo did not disclose a specific spending figure. The planned effort is expected to operate in at least eight states and comes as Republicans prepare for a challenging midterm environment, with Democrats seeking to regain control of Congress. Historically, the party occupying the White House has often faced losses in congressional midterms, making voter turnout an especially important factor for both sides.
The proposed investment would further strengthen Musk’s position as one of the Republican Party’s most important individual financial backers. Musk spent heavily during the 2024 election campaign in support of Donald Trump and other Republican candidates and has continued directing substantial resources toward conservative political causes. Federal campaign finance records reviewed by Reuters show that America PAC has spent more than $52 million since January 2025, while the organization has raised roughly $50 million during the current election cycle, with the vast majority of that money coming from Musk.
Why America PAC matters in the 2026 midterms
The scale of the planned operation reflects the growing importance of outside political groups in modern U.S. elections. America PAC is a super PAC, meaning it can accept unlimited contributions from individuals and corporations and spend unlimited amounts on political activities, provided it does not directly coordinate its spending with candidates or their campaigns. Such organizations have become major players in U.S. elections, allowing wealthy donors to direct substantial resources toward voter mobilization, advertising and political messaging.
For Republicans, the timing could be particularly significant. The party faces a political environment shaped by public dissatisfaction over economic conditions and concerns about voter enthusiasm. Democrats, meanwhile, are attempting to capitalize on the traditional midterm disadvantage faced by the president’s party and win control of both chambers of Congress. A large scale turnout operation could therefore become an important tool for Republicans in closely contested states and districts.
Musk’s political spending also carries additional significance because of his business interests. His companies, including SpaceX, have extensive commercial relationships with the U.S. government, with SpaceX receiving significant federal business. That makes Musk’s growing political influence a subject of broader public and political attention, particularly as the billionaire becomes increasingly involved in electoral campaigns and policy debates.
The upcoming midterms will ultimately determine whether Republicans can maintain their congressional position or whether Democrats can regain control of Washington. Musk’s planned America PAC campaign is unlikely to determine the outcome by itself, but an investment potentially reaching $120 million could give Republicans a powerful organizational and financial advantage in targeted states.
As campaigning intensifies, the scale of outside spending is likely to become one of the defining features of the 2026 election battle. The America PAC campaign will be closely watched as both parties compete to mobilize voters, particularly in states and districts where relatively small changes in turnout could influence control of Congress.
