55th World Macedonian Diaspora Meeting to Unite Macedonians in Trnovo

Trnovo 1999

The 55th World Macedonian Diaspora Meeting and 46th Border Meeting of Macedonians from the Aegean part of Macedonia will take place on August 2, 2026, in the village of Trnovo near Bitola. The long standing tradition has brought Macedonians from around the world to the foot of Mount Pelister for more than half a century, with this year’s event again serving as a major gathering for the global Macedonian community.

The event will take place as a unified All Macedonian gathering and coincides with the Orthodox Christian feast of Saint Prophet Elijah, known as Ilinden. The holiday is also observed as the Day of Statehood of Macedonia, commemorating the 1903 Ilinden Uprising against Ottoman rule and the establishment of the short-lived but symbolically important Krushevo Republic.

The official program begins at 10:30 AM in the courtyard of the Church of the Dormition of the Holy Virgin, following a holy liturgy at 7:30 AM blessed by His Eminence Metropolitan Peter of Prespa-Pelagonia. Bitola Mayor Toni Konjanovski will serve as patron of the gathering and welcome attendees alongside representatives of the organizers.

The ceremonial address on behalf of the Motherland of Macedonian Emigrants will be delivered by Prof. Dr. Vasil Tocinovski, the first and long-serving lecturer of the Macedonian Language Lectorship in Rijeka, Croatia. Tocinovski is also recognized as a Macedonian writer, essayist, critic, literary historian and translator.

Ilinden Heritage and the Global Macedonian Community

The 55th World Macedonian Diaspora Meeting carries considerable historical and cultural significance for a community whose identity has been shaped by generations of struggle, migration and efforts to preserve its heritage. The Ilinden Uprising of August 2, 1903, remains closely associated with modern Macedonian statehood, while the Krushevo Republic continues to hold a powerful place in the country’s historical memory.

The uprising was eventually suppressed by Ottoman forces, resulting in widespread destruction, civilian deaths and displacement. Its legacy was later invoked by Yugoslav communists, who proclaimed the Socialist Republic of Macedonia on August 2, 1944, during the first session of ASNOM, presenting the event as a “Second Ilinden” connected to the unfinished aspirations of 1903.

Today, Ilinden combines religious and national significance, reflecting the close relationship between faith, historical memory and national identity. The gathering in Trnovo has become an important part of that tradition, while the village has also hosted Aegean Macedonian refugee meetings for decades. Historical research has documented the presence of Macedonians from Australia, Canada and the United States at such gatherings as far back as the 1980s.

This year’s program will include cultural and artistic performances by the Cultural-Artistic Society “Goce Delchev” from Bitola and KUD “Novaci” from Novaci. Their performances of traditional Macedonian music and dance will add a cultural dimension to the gathering and provide an opportunity for participants from different generations to celebrate their shared heritage.

The event is expected to bring together Macedonians from across the country, the diaspora and the wider homeland, reinforcing connections between communities separated by geography and generations. The location in the Bitola region is particularly meaningful, given its proximity to areas associated with the history of the Ilinden Uprising and the gathering’s long-standing connection with Macedonian refugee communities.

For the Macedonian diaspora, the 55th World Macedonian Diaspora Meeting is therefore more than a cultural event. It provides an opportunity to preserve collective memory, strengthen relationships between communities and reaffirm a shared connection to Macedonian history, language, faith and traditions. As families and communities gather in Trnovo, the event continues a tradition that has connected Macedonians across borders for generations.
