“Mother Macedonia” Monument Proposed in Novi Sad

The Novi Sad City Council’s Committee for Culture and Information has reviewed a proposal to install a monument titled “Mother Macedonia” in the Serbian city.

The initiative was submitted by the National Council of the Macedonian National Minority to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the arrival of Macedonians in Serbia’s northern province of Vojvodina.

According to the proposal, the monument would symbolize the preservation of Macedonian identity, remembrance of the community’s roots and gratitude toward the society in which Macedonians have built their lives.

The sculpture would depict a woman dressed in traditional Macedonian clothing accompanied by two children. One child, held in her arms, would face Serbia, while the other would stand beside her and face Macedonia. The composition is intended to represent the historical and cultural connection between the two countries.

The proposed bronze sculpture would stand approximately 6.5 feet tall on a roughly 16-inch concrete base covered with granite slabs. Sculptor Siniša Noveski created the conceptual design.

Supporters have proposed placing the monument in one of Novi Sad’s prominent public spaces, although an exact location has not yet been selected.

Before reaching a final decision, the committee will request professional assessments from the city’s Urban Planning Institute and the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments. The proposal will be reconsidered after those evaluations are completed.
