Zagreb’s average monthly net salary reached €1,758 in May 2026, placing earnings in the Croatian capital €206 above the national average. The latest data on the average salary in Zagreb also show a substantial gap between the average and median wage, with half of employees earning less than €1,500.
The average net salary fell by 1.3% compared with April but increased by 6.4% compared with May 2025. Croatia’s nationwide average net salary for the same month stood at €1,552.
Half of Zagreb Employees Earn Less Than €1,500
The median net salary in Zagreb was €1,500 in May, meaning half of employees earned less than that amount and half earned more. The difference between the median and average salary indicates that the €1,758 average does not represent the earnings received by a large part of the workforce.
Differences between sectors were also significant. The highest average monthly net salary was recorded in crude oil and natural gas extraction, where employees earned an average of €2,598.
At the other end of the scale, clothing manufacturing recorded the lowest average net salary at €1,019. This created a difference of more than €1,500 between the highest- and lowest-paying sectors included in the data.
The average monthly gross salary per employee in Zagreb’s legal entities stood at €2,528. It was 1.9% lower than in April but 7% higher than in May 2025.
Zagreb Salaries Remain Well Above the National Average
The average salary in Zagreb was €206 higher than Croatia’s nationwide monthly average of €1,552 in May. The capital therefore continued to record earnings above the countrywide level despite the monthly decline from April.
The reports also compare Zagreb’s earnings with Serbia, where the average net salary in May was 118,398 dinars, or around €1,009. On that basis, the average Zagreb salary was approximately €750 higher.
Serbia’s median salary stood at 93,277 dinars, or around €795, compared with Zagreb’s median of €1,500. In Belgrade, salaries were above Serbia’s national average, with the municipality of Stari Grad recording an average of 191,185 dinars.
The figures show that Zagreb combines an average salary considerably above Croatia’s national level with substantial differences between industries and between average and median earnings. While the average net salary reached €1,758, half of employed residents earned below €1,500 in May.
