Residents of Belgrade should expect mosquito control teams in several parts of the city as authorities continue efforts to reduce adult mosquito numbers during the summer. The public utility company Gradska čistoća will carry out treatments using equipment from the ground and water, with the latest operation scheduled from 3:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. The treatment will cover numerous locations across Belgrade and surrounding areas, including the embankment from Progar toward Jakovo, Bojčinska Forest, Boljevci, areas around the Sava River, SAJ, 13. maj, Goveđi Brod, Block 45 toward the Ostružnica Bridge and Surčin.
Additional treatment will take place around Jajinci, Rakovica, Miljakovačka Forest, Miljakovački Vinogradi, Staro Kijevo, Usek Kijevo and Radio Far. Several central and southern parts of the city are also included, such as Banjica, Stepa Stepanović, Kumodraž, Kalemegdan, Dorćol, the Danube quay, Čukarica and Banovo Brdo. The program uses thermal and cold fogging to target adult mosquitoes in public areas, although operations can be postponed because of rain, strong winds or unsuitable temperatures. Authorities are asking residents to cooperate with treatment teams, while beekeepers have been specifically advised to take precautions to protect their bees. Residents can also reduce mosquito breeding around their homes by removing standing water from flowerpot trays, old containers, tires, barrels and other areas where water can collect. Window screens and mosquito repellents can provide additional protection. The city says the products used by the teams are registered with the relevant environmental authorities and included on the temporary list of biocidal products.
Belgrade has been conducting mosquito control operations throughout the summer as warm and wet conditions create favorable breeding conditions. Residents who notice unusually high mosquito numbers in a particular area can report the problem to the Belgrade City Service Center at 11-0-11, allowing municipal services to identify locations where additional treatment may be needed. The latest operation is part of the city’s continuing summer campaign to keep mosquito numbers under control across residential and recreational areas.
