Novak Djokovic has attracted attention just days before the US Open after unexpectedly ending a practice session in New York while trailing Belgian Zizou Bergs 3:0. The Serbian star had spent around 40 minutes on court before deciding to stop, despite the players originally planning to complete a practice set. The unusual finish immediately raised questions because Djokovic is in the final stages of preparation for one of the biggest tournaments of the season and is once again chasing another major title.
There is currently no confirmation that Djokovic ended the session because of an injury, meaning the incident should not automatically be viewed as a sign of a physical problem. Players often adjust their training shortly before Grand Slam tournaments to manage workload, recovery and fitness. Still, the decision has attracted attention because Djokovic has become increasingly careful with his physical condition in the later stages of his career. The Serbian also recently saw his mixed doubles campaign end early after he and Aryna Sabalenka were eliminated in the opening round by Katerina Siniakova and Henry Patten.
Djokovic’s main goal remains the US Open singles title and a chance to extend his record to a 25th Grand Slam championship. He last won the tournament in 2023, when he captured his 24th major singles trophy. His chances could receive an additional boost from the absence of several leading players, with Jannik Sinner, Jack Draper and Holger Rune among the notable names missing from the tournament. Carlos Alcaraz remains one of the leading contenders, however, meaning Djokovic will still face a difficult challenge in New York.
For now, the short practice session with Bergs remains the main talking point. Djokovic stopping after just 40 minutes while trailing 3:0 is unusual, but there is not enough information to conclude that anything is wrong physically. His next appearances on the practice courts should provide a better indication of his condition and preparation. With another opportunity to make Grand Slam history approaching, Djokovic will now be hoping that the unexpected training interruption is quickly forgotten once the competitive action begins.
