U.S. health officials are investigating a multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to recalled broccoli sprouts, with 22 infections reported across four states and two people hospitalized. The Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say epidemiological and traceback evidence has connected the illnesses to broccoli sprouts grown by Evergreen Fresh Sprouts in Moyie Springs, Idaho. No deaths have been reported, but the investigation remains ongoing as authorities determine whether additional products or illnesses could be involved.
The affected sprouts were recalled on September 4 after Montana officials detected Salmonella in a sample. Subsequent laboratory analysis found that the strain identified in the product matched the strain responsible for illnesses in the outbreak. Investigators also found a strong connection between the patients and sprouts: all 19 people interviewed reported eating sprouts before becoming sick, while 17 specifically said they had eaten broccoli sprouts.
Illnesses have been reported in Idaho, Montana, Utah and Washington. The FDA has advised consumers, restaurants and retailers not to eat, sell or serve the recalled Evergreen Fresh Sprouts broccoli sprouts. The recalled products were packaged in plastic bags or containers and carried expiration dates of September 7, 9, 11, 14 or 16.
Officials say the products were confirmed to have been distributed to customers in Idaho, Montana and Washington, although they may have reached other states as well. Consumers who may have purchased the recalled products should follow official recall guidance and avoid eating or serving them.
Salmonella Outbreak Raises Food Safety Concerns
Salmonella is a common cause of foodborne illness and can produce symptoms including diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. According to the FDA, illness generally develops within 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food and often lasts several days. While many infections are relatively mild, young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems face a greater risk of serious illness.
The outbreak is also drawing attention because sprouts have repeatedly presented food safety challenges. Sprouts are grown under warm and moist conditions that can allow bacteria to multiply if contamination is present. The FDA has previously identified contaminated seeds as an important source of Salmonella in sprout associated outbreaks.
The agency has also conducted sampling and monitoring programs focused specifically on sprouts because contamination can occur before the product reaches consumers. The current investigation is examining the recalled broccoli sprouts and working to determine how the contamination occurred.
The broccoli sprout investigation comes during a period of increased attention to foodborne illness in the United States. Federal agencies are simultaneously monitoring other outbreaks and recalls involving products such as alfalfa sprouts and jalapeños, while a separate Salmonella outbreak linked to shell eggs was recently closed after 134 illnesses and 34 hospitalizations were reported across 18 states.
Officials Continue Tracing Recalled Sprouts
For consumers, the latest Salmonella outbreak highlights the importance of paying attention to food recalls and public health alerts, particularly when fresh products are involved. Authorities are continuing to trace the recalled broccoli sprouts and investigate whether the outbreak extends beyond the currently identified cases.
The FDA says its investigation remains underway and that additional information will be released if new evidence becomes available. The outbreak demonstrates how quickly a contamination event involving a relatively small food producer can become a multistate public health issue.
With 22 confirmed illnesses already identified and the investigation continuing, health officials are focused on removing potentially contaminated sprouts from the market and determining the full scope of the outbreak. For now, the recall remains the key measure for reducing further exposure while investigators work to establish how the contamination occurred.
