Ukraine has accused Russia of continuing attacks on its energy infrastructure despite President Donald Trump‘s announcement of an immediate energy ceasefire between the two countries.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday, October 12, that Russian strikes had hit at least six energy-related targets across Ukraine.
According to Reuters, the attacks came shortly after Trump declared that Moscow and Kyiv had agreed to stop targeting each other’s energy facilities.
Neither country had confirmed such an agreement when Trump made the announcement.
Russian Strikes Continue Despite Ceasefire Announcement
Zelenskyy said the latest attacks demonstrated Moscow’s unwillingness to accept the proposed energy ceasefire.
Among the reported targets were a gas facility and a petrol station struck by Russian drones.
In Kyiv, an attack on a residential building killed two people and injured at least nine, according to local officials.
Additional strikes hit Kharkiv and other Ukrainian regions, causing further casualties and damage.
Ukraine has faced repeated attacks on its electricity network, resulting in power outages and disruptions to essential services.
Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces had not attacked Russian oil refineries overnight and reiterated Kyiv’s willingness to halt such strikes if Moscow agreed to do the same.
Kremlin Rejects Broader Ceasefire Proposal
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said discussions about a possible energy ceasefire were continuing.
However, he rejected Zelenskyy’s proposal for a broader 60-day ceasefire that could allow Ukraine to hold elections.
Trump’s announcement came days after Washington unveiled an agreement involving Russian diesel fuel, which Zelenskyy criticized.
European leaders expressed skepticism about the proposed ceasefire and reiterated their support for Ukraine.
The European Union also approved additional sanctions against Russia, expanding restrictions on individuals and businesses.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said continued economic pressure was necessary to encourage Moscow to negotiate.
The developments highlight continuing disagreements over a potential ceasefire as Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure persist.
