Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel has a historic opportunity to work with US President Donald Trump to confront the threat posed by Iran, as uncertainty over Israel’s parliamentary election leaves the country’s next government undecided.

Speaking to supporters at Likud party headquarters in Jerusalem early Wednesday, October 28, Netanyahu emphasized the importance of cooperation between Israel and the United States on regional security.

“Israel faces a singular historical opportunity, together with our partner President Trump, to remove the existential threat of Iran once and for all,” Netanyahu said, according to Reuters.

His remarks came after Tuesday’s election produced no clear governing majority, setting the stage for potentially lengthy coalition negotiations.

Trump Endorses Netanyahu Ahead of Israeli Election

President Trump publicly supported Netanyahu’s reelection campaign, urging Israeli voters to back the longtime prime minister.

In a social media post ahead of the election, Trump called on voters to support Netanyahu, saying the two leaders needed to finish the work they had started.

Netanyahu has highlighted his relationship with Trump as an important part of Israel’s security strategy, particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear program and military capabilities.

The two governments have previously coordinated military operations against Iranian targets, while Washington has continued to demand restrictions on Tehran’s nuclear activities.

Iran maintains that its nuclear program is intended for peaceful purposes and has condemned American and Israeli military operations.

The prospect of further military action remains uncertain, with no new joint operation announced following Netanyahu’s election-night remarks.

Israeli Election Leaves Future Government Uncertain

Preliminary results from Israel’s October 27 election showed Netanyahu’s right-wing bloc falling short of the 61 seats required for a majority in the 120-member Knesset.

His principal challenger, former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, also faced difficulties assembling a governing coalition.

Despite the uncertain result, Netanyahu called for the formation of a right-wing government and pointed to Israel’s military operations as part of his record.

Trump commented on the election early Wednesday, suggesting that his endorsement had helped Netanyahu’s performance.

The US president also acknowledged the close result, describing the political situation as a complicated contest.

Final election results and subsequent coalition negotiations will determine whether Netanyahu remains prime minister with a new parliamentary mandate.

For the United States, the outcome will influence future coordination with Israel on Iran, regional security and Middle East diplomacy.

Netanyahu’s latest remarks signal his intention to maintain close cooperation with Trump, although any future military or diplomatic decisions would depend on developments in both countries and the wider region.
