Police operations in Skopje, Tetovo and Kumanovo are targeting suspected financial irregularities involving healthcare services allegedly billed both to the national health insurance fund and directly to patients.
Authorities in Macedonia are investigating suspected financial abuses involving more than 260 million denars — over €4 million — in transactions linked to a private healthcare provider, according to unofficial information reported by Skopje Info.
Police operations are being conducted at multiple locations in Skopje, Tetovo and Kumanovo as investigators examine allegations that certain medical services were charged twice: once to the Health Insurance Fund and again to patients at private rates.
According to the report, the suspected scheme involves healthcare packages whose costs had already been covered by the national fund. Patients allegedly paid additional amounts beyond the legally required co-payment.
Private Eye Hospital Reportedly Under Investigation
Unofficial reports identify a specialized private eye hospital in Skopje, backed by Turkish investors, as being connected to the investigation. The facility reportedly began operating in 2011 and occupies more than 4,000 square meters.
Authorities are also examining how the funds were recorded and used in the healthcare provider’s subsequent business operations, including whether some of the money entered regular payment channels and was spent on various business purposes.
The allegations have not been officially confirmed by the relevant institutions, and no determination of wrongdoing has been announced.
Investigation Continues
The police operation includes the examination of documents and financial records at several locations. Investigators are seeking to establish whether laws were violated and, if so, to what extent.
As of the latest available report, authorities had not officially disclosed how many people were involved or which criminal charges, if any, might follow.
Further details are expected after the police operation concludes and the competent institutions issue an official statement.
