The Croatian-Serbian comedy The Wedding is getting a sequel after attracting more than 2.5 million moviegoers worldwide and generating over $20 million at the box office. The film’s success has also sparked international interest in remaking the Balkan hit for new audiences.

Director Igor Šeregi and producer Ivan Kelava discussed the film’s unexpected success and future plans in an interview published by Deadline on November 5, 2026.

The comedy, originally titled Svadba, premiered in January and became a major box-office success across Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and Slovenia.

A Balkan Comedy That Broke Box Office Records

The Wedding follows two families brought together by an unexpected pregnancy and an upcoming marriage.

The daughter of a Croatian businessman falls in love with the son of a Serbian politician. However, their relationship creates tension between their families, whose nationalist attitudes and personal interests threaten to turn the wedding into chaos.

The comedy uses humor to explore cultural differences, family relationships and political divisions across the Balkans.

According to Deadline, the film has attracted more than 2.5 million viewers across 32 territories, generating over $20 million in ticket sales.

In Croatia alone, more than 800,000 people watched the movie, surpassing the country’s long-standing cinema attendance record held by Titanic.

The film was produced on a budget of approximately €1 million and filmed in just 21 days.

Its cast includes Rene Bitorajac, Dragan Bjelogrlić, Vesna Trivalić, Linda Begonja, Anđelka Stević Žugić and Marko Grabež.

Despite the film’s commercial success, its creators admitted that they had initially been uncertain whether audiences would embrace the story.

The production took nearly a decade to reach cinemas, including several years spent securing financing.

However, the filmmakers ultimately discovered that the story resonated with audiences across national borders.

Sequel in Development as International Interest Grows

Following the film’s success, Šeregi and Kelava confirmed that a sequel is already in development.

They have not revealed the new storyline or announced a release date.

The director suggested that the next film would continue exploring the characters’ complicated relationships, although he did not confirm speculation that the story would center on the baptism of the couple’s child.

Meanwhile, international producers have expressed interest in adapting the comedy for other markets.

A Latin American remake is already in development, while additional adaptation opportunities are being explored.

The film’s international sales are handled by HanWay Films.

Its creators believe the central story can appeal to audiences outside the Balkans because family tensions and cultural differences are familiar themes in many societies.

The Wedding also demonstrates the commercial potential of regional productions that combine recognizable actors with stories rooted in local experiences.

For Balkan communities living in the United States and Canada, the film offers a humorous look at the traditions, relationships and cultural differences that continue to shape life across the region.

With a sequel underway and international remake discussions continuing, The Wedding could become one of the most commercially successful Balkan film franchises in recent years.
